SmartSell Platform Overview
Module 01 — SmartSell Platform Overview
Audience: Customer Success & Sales Agents
Goal: Understand what SmartSell is, who it is for, what problems it solves, and how to describe it confidently to a prospect.
1. What Is SmartSell?
SmartSell is a cloud-based retail and business management platform built for African businesses. It lets a business owner manage their entire operation — sales, stock, team, and reports — from their phone or web browser.
SmartSell is a SaaS (Software as a Service) product. Customers pay a monthly or annual subscription and access the platform without needing to install special software on a computer.
The platform has two components that work together:
| Component | What it is | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile App | Android/iOS app built in React Native (Expo) | Cashiers, managers, owners on the go |
| Web Portal | Browser-based dashboard | Business owners, managers for deeper configuration and reporting |
Both components connect to the same account and data. A sale processed on the mobile app appears immediately in the web portal.
2. Core Problems SmartSell Solves
When selling SmartSell, always connect features to the real problems your customer faces:
| Customer Problem | SmartSell Solution |
|---|---|
| "I don't know what stock I have" | Real-time inventory management per branch |
| "I lose money because cashiers steal" | Role-based POS access, per-employee sales tracking |
| "I can't sell when the internet is down" | Offline-first POS — works without internet, syncs when back online |
| "I have multiple shops and can't track them all" | Multi-branch architecture — one account, all branches visible |
| "My cashiers are slow at the counter" | Barcode scanning + product search for fast checkout |
| "Customers buy on credit and never pay" | Built-in credit management with payment tracking |
| "I have no idea how my business is performing" | Sales, inventory, and product reports with charts |
| "I need my team to see only what they need" | Four user roles: Owner, Manager, Sales, Viewer |
3. Who Is SmartSell For?
Primary targets:
- Small to medium retail shops (supermarkets, pharmacies, electronics, clothing)
- Businesses with more than one branch
- Business owners who want to manage remotely
- Businesses that sell on credit to customers
Secondary targets:
- Wholesale distributors with a warehouse and multiple distribution points
- Franchise or chain businesses that need centralized reporting
Key qualifying question for a prospect:
"Do you have more than one person working in your business, or more than one location?"
If yes — SmartSell is a strong fit.
4. Subscription Plans
SmartSell operates on tiered subscription plans. As a sales agent, you should know the general structure so you can recommend the right plan.
| Plan | Best For | Key Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Single-location businesses just starting out | 1 branch, limited users |
| Professional | Growing businesses with multiple branches | Multiple branches, more users, advanced inventory |
| Enterprise | Large operations, franchises, distributors | Unlimited branches/users, API access, custom features |
Agent Note: When a customer says "I only have one shop," start them on Starter. When they grow or want multi-branch access, upgrade them to Professional.
Subscription billing is managed from within the app under the Subscriptions section. Customers can also apply promo codes to unlock discounts.
5. Key Platform Concepts
Before supporting or selling SmartSell, you must understand these core concepts:
Business
A Business is the top-level entity in SmartSell. One user account can own or be a member of multiple businesses. Each business has its own products, inventory, employees, and subscription.
Branch
A Branch is a physical location that belongs to a Business. Each branch has its own inventory. Stock at Branch A is separate from stock at Branch B, but both belong to the same business.
Warehouse
A Warehouse is a central stock storage point. You can push stock from a warehouse to one or more branches. Warehouses are accessed separately from the main business navigation (they appear on the Dashboard alongside businesses).
Roles
Every user in a business has one of four roles:
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Full access: billing, settings, all branches, all reports |
| Manager | Manage branches assigned to them: inventory, employees, reports |
| Sales | POS operations only on their assigned branch |
| Viewer | Read-only: can see reports but cannot change anything |
Important: When a Sales-role user opens the app, they land directly on the POS screen for their assigned branch. They do not see the full business menu.
Offline Mode
The POS works without an internet connection. When the device goes offline, sales are saved locally and automatically uploaded when the connection is restored. The agent can also trigger a manual sync.
6. Language Support
SmartSell supports both English and French. The language is selected during account registration and can be changed in the app settings. This is critical for markets like Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal where both languages are used.
7. Summary
SmartSell is a complete retail management platform — POS, inventory, team, credits, and reports — designed for African businesses, works offline, supports multiple branches, and is available in English and French.
Your pitch in one sentence:
"SmartSell lets you manage your sales, stock, and team from your phone — even without internet — whether you have one shop or ten."
